A Kenzan, also called a flower frog, is a traditional Japanese tool used in Ikebana to arrange flowers upright in water. Unlike floral foam, it is fully reusable and eco-friendly, making it a sustainable choice for both florists and flower enthusiasts.

Working with a Kenzan is more than just a technique – it’s a creative and meditative process. You can experiment with lines, shapes, and movement to design minimalist displays or build impressive centerpieces. For many, using a Kenzan becomes a form of therapy and a way to find calm through creativity.

THE STORY BEHIND HANATABA'S KENZAN RING

In 2018, inspired by the success of the Bouquet Twister, Christian Jonasson set out to revolutionize flower arranging once again. His idea? A Kenzan in the shape of a ring — both functional and beautiful.

The prototype was a hit among florists, and in 2023 it gained global attention when 100 Kenzan Rings decorated the Nobel Banquet tables, broadcasted live to millions.

What started as a simple idea became a beloved innovation for florists and creatives around the world.

FAQ's

Can I use Kenzan with any vase or bowl?

Yes – the Kenzan 200 mm is ideal for larger bowls, trays, and wide vases. It’s especially suited for shallow or open containers where you want full control over your floral design.

Just make sure the base is flat and the container can support the weight and diameter of the ring.

Will the metal damage my vase or bowl?

No – each Kenzan 200 mm includes discreet silicone feet that you can attach underneath to protect your vase or bowl from scratches or discoloration. This makes it safe to use in glass, ceramic, or metal containers.

However, since the Kenzan is made of solid metal, minor marks or discoloration may occur over time, especially with delicate surfaces. Always remove the Kenzan between uses and let it dry upside down to avoid moisture build-up.

Why should I choose Kenzan over floral foam?

Kenzan is reusable, eco-friendly, and delivers a cleaner aesthetic. Unlike floral foam, it doesn't break down or release microplastics.

It also keeps stems more stable and promotes better hydration – which means longer-lasting blooms.
